Same Day Crowns Q&A
What are same-day crowns?
A crown is a custom-made cap shaped like a tooth. It fits over the visible portion of your tooth to restore its natural shape, size, and color.
Crowns typically take at least two visits to plan and place. During the first visit, the dentist takes impressions of your teeth to create your custom-made crowns. An outside laboratory takes about 2-3 weeks to create your custom crowns, during which time you wear temporary restorations. Once your crowns are ready, you return to the office for your permanent crowns.
By investing in digital X-rays, 3-D dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and an onsite milling machine, Dr. Moore and the team can create your same-day CEREC® crowns at Four Corners Dental and Dentures.
CEREC, or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, are single-visit restorations that Dr. Moore can create and place in one appointment.
Same-day crowns eliminate the need for two appointments, temporary crowns, and extensive time spent waiting in the dentist’s chair. With same-day CEREC crowns, you can leave the office with your permanent crown in one visit.
Why would I need same-day crowns?
Crowns serve two functions — restoring damaged teeth and protecting them from future injury. When compared to traditional crowns, same-day restorations are fast, durable, and affordable solutions to:
- Restore a cracked, broken, or decayed tooth
- Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
- Attach to a dental implant
- Secure a dental bridge
- Protect a tooth after root canal treatment
While crowns are primarily restorative, they also serve a cosmetic purpose. Crowns cover misshapen, discolored, and overly short teeth.
What happens during the same-day crowns process?
Placing a same-day crown is fast and affordable. During your visit, Dr. Moore reshapes your affected tooth to prepare for the crown. Next, he takes highly accurate digital impressions to create your custom-made restoration.
Since the practice features an onsite milling machine, you can watch it create your crown while you wait in the lobby. Once the machine finishes creating your CEREC crown, Dr. Moore places it over your tooth and secures it. He can make any necessary adjustments to ensure the proper fit before you leave the office with your restored smile.
